D Day 80th Anniversary
In 2024 the UK will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944 with a series of major commemorations and events across the UK and in France. Also known as D-Day, the historic operation saw the Allied Forces mount a large-scale invasion of Nazi-occupied France that ultimately tipped the course of the Second World War in the Allies’ favour.
In Studley we are marking the occasion on Thursday 6th June with a Beacon Lighting on the field adjacent to the scout hut at 9pm. The Scouts will be joining forces with Studley Parish Council. Details to follow.
On Saturday 8th June we will be combining a Celebration of the success of the D Day landings with The Big Help out, launched by King Charles around the time of his Coronation last year. Our Cubs are pledging to ‘Help Out’ at the Family Fun Day being arranged by Aunty Jen’s Theatre Company at Studley Sports and Social Club. The Cubs will be helping with the Jubilee Challenge Cub by running a traditional Scout Firelighting Competition! Other activities and attractions available on the day will be a vintage fairground, bouncy castles, a dog show, bag pipers, the village town crier, an armoured personnel carrier, a brass and wind band, food and craft stalls plus a production of ‘Oh, What a Lovely War’ from Aunty Jen, which is bound to entertain and provoke thoughts about war. Come along a join in the fun, 11 am – 5 pm.
